Basic Rules of Volleyball

The game is structured into matches that are decided over the best of five sets. To win a set, a team must score 25 points and lead by at least two points. If the match extends to a fifth set, this decisive set is played to 15 points, but a two-point margin is still necessary to secure the win.
Points in volleyball are scored when the ball lands within the opponent’s court boundaries or if an error is made by the opposing team. The sport is known for its fast-paced action, with the ball often reaching speeds of up to 130 km/h, especially during powerful jump serves or smashes. This high speed requires players to have exceptional strength and quick reflexes to effectively block and counter these rapid plays.
Updates to Indoor Volleyball for Paris 2024 Olympics
On April 6, 2022, the International Olympic Committee endorsed several updates to the Olympic volleyball program, particularly the qualification process for the Paris 2024 Games. The indoor volleyball tournament will feature twelve teams for each gender. France, as the host nation and the reigning men’s champions, automatically secures one spot for both its men’s and women’s teams.
The remaining teams will qualify through a dual pathway. Initially, the winners and runners-up from each of the three Olympic qualification tournaments will earn direct spots. Following this, the last five spots will be awarded based on the FIVB world rankings as of June 2024. This system respects the universality principle, ensuring representation from continents that have not yet qualified teams for the Paris 2024 tournament.
